Loïc Mahé
Domaine Loïc Mahé, Chenin at the heart of the Savennières terroirs
Loïc Mahé, an adventure that began in 2000
It was in 2000 that Loïc Mahé planted his first vines on the slopes of Savennières, south of Angers, in the Loire Valley. Today, he cultivates 4.5 hectares, entirely dedicated to Chenin, the emblematic grape variety of the appellation. His winery, located in an outbuilding of the Château de Chamboureau, is used for small-scale vinification, guided by an idea that has driven his work from the beginning: letting each plot tell the story of its terroir, without trying to impose a style on the wines.
Schists, sands, and living soils
In Savennières, the vines plunge their roots into ochre, green, and purple schists, but also into aeolian sands, two types of soils that give Chenin very different expressions. The estate has been certified organic since 2011, with a particularly careful approach to soil life: winter cover crops, grazing, herbal teas and no synthetic chemical products. Yields are deliberately limited and the harvest is entirely manual, with several passes to select the grapes at the right level of ripeness.
Vibrant Chenins, balancing freshness and depth
In the cellar, Loïc Mahé continues the same meticulous work: slow fermentations with indigenous yeasts, no chaptalization, and no oenological additives, except for a little volcanic sulfur. The wines are aged according to the cuvée in oak barrels, stoneware amphorae, or small containers, to complement the different expressions of the terroir. Sables & Schistes, Amphorae, Les Fougerais, Équilibre, and even the confidential M showcase the estate's full diversity, from fruity Chenins to wines with deeper texture and beautiful saline finishes. Whites with character, a real place at the table, and above all great aging potential, as the great terroirs of Savennières know how to offer.
